Students in the Freshman Summer Start Program

Freshman Summer Start Program (FSSP) and Orientation

Students enrolled in the Freshman Summer Start Program (FSSP) may attend any Orientation session before the start of FSSP on August 4. Submit your reservation promptly! Space in each Orientation session is limited and session dates will close when they are full. See the Reserve Your Space section of this website to access the online reservation system.

Please note: There is an additional cost for FSSP participants in the August 3-4 session, as it includes an early drop-off of belongings at the residence hall, additional meals, and an additional overnight on campus. See the last question below for details.

FAQ

Why should I attend Orientation?

Attending Orientation is highly recommended for all incoming students. It provides an important and valuable head start for new students, whether beginning UCSB in summer or fall quarter. While it is not mandatory, Orientation provides extensive academic advising, in addition to information from UCSB faculty, staff, and current students on how to be successful in the first year at college. Students who attend Orientation will register for their fall courses during the two-day program.

What forms should I complete before attending Orientation?

During Orientation, you will enroll in your Fall 2017 courses. Planning for Fall 2017 is easier when you have already selected the courses you will take while in FSSP during Summer 2017. To select your Summer 2017 courses, if you haven’t already done so, please see the FSSP Course Enrollment information prior to attending your Orientation session.

I’m a parent of an FSSP student. What are my Orientation options?

There is a Parent Orientation program during each Orientation session. If your FSSP student is attending the session on August 3-4, you have the same option to attend the Parent Orientation as with any other session. If you choose not to attend the Parent Orientation during the August 3-4 session, please note that students will be in Orientation programming from Thursday morning through Friday afternoon, and will then go to their FSSP residence hall to participate in FSSP activities.

What is the Orientation program fee for the session on August 3-4?

The program fee for FSSP students in this session is $380, which includes two overnights and six meals on campus. FSSP students in this session will stay overnight on campus during Orientation for two nights - both Wednesday, August 2 and Thursday, August 3 - and will drop off their belongings for FSSP on Wednesday afternoon prior to the Orientation session. All FSSP students will begin staying overnight in the FSSP residence hall on Friday, August 4.

See the Program Options and Fees section of this website for program fee information for all other freshman sessions.
