Online Freshman Sessions

Preparing for Your Online Orientation Session

Be sure to submit your reservation for an Orientation session using the reservation system. Please read the following information about how to prepare so that the remote session is successful for you.

Course Registration

In order to register for fall classes during your Orientation session, you must have a UCSB Net ID and password. This is done by activating your U-Mail account at www.umail.ucsb.edu. You must activate your U-Mail before your online session and have your UCSB Net ID and password on hand during the session.

Information You Will Need

  • Your UCSB Net ID and password - see Course Registration instructions above.
  • Unofficial copies of transcripts from previous college-level courses (high school transcripts are not needed for Orientation).

Technology You Will Need

  • An internet connection. Many of the presentations, including each academic advising session, will be live and require consistent connection to the internet to fully participate.
  • Students will need to sign in to UCSB GauchoSpace using their UCSB Net ID and password, and from there they will be provided with a link to UCSB Zoom in order to be authenticated and admitted into meeting rooms.
  • Parents and family members will connect separately to their online program through Zoom at https://zoom.us/join or the Zoom app on phone and tablet devices.

Placement Exams

The Math Placement Exam is not a requirement for most students at UCSB. To determine whether you need to take the exam, see Placement Exams in the Freshman Orientation section of this website. If you need to take the Math Placement Exam, please complete the exam online prior to your online Orientation session in order to register for a math class during Orientation.

For information on the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR), see Placement Exams in the Freshman Orientation section of this website.

Previous Math Courses

If you are transferring college credit in mathematics, you'll need an unofficial copy of the transcript showing your college-level work. Email the transcript to the Math Department or fax it to 805-893-2385. Include your UCSB perm number. For questions, email: dnagy@math.ucsb.edu.

Program Notes and Schedule

The Online Freshman Orientation is for students only. Parents and family members who have registered for the Online Parent & Family Orientation will participate in a separate but concurrent program designed specifically for them. Parents are welcome to join the program as works best for their schedule. Most parent presentations will also be recorded and available to view at a later time.

Students: Please ensure that you are available from 9:00am to 6:00pm (Pacific Daylight Time) on both days of your session to participate fully. Failure to participate in any part of your session can jeopardize proper academic advising and course enrollment. It is your responsibility to communicate with Orientation Programs if you require additional assistance.

Optional virtual tours begin at 8:30am on Day 1.

Prior to your session, you will receive two emails from us:
– a session date reminder (emailed 7 days before your session)
– an email that will include include instructions on how to view the full program schedule and join your remote session (emailed approximately 2 days before your session)
Any registered parents or family members will receive a separate reminder, as well as an email with instructions for the parent program schedule and how to join their session.
If any of these emails are not received, please check your Spam or Promotions folder.

Changes and Cancellations

Any change to your reservation is subject to availability and it is preferred that changes be made well in advance of your session date. You can make changes through the online reservation system up to 10 days in advance of your session. Within 10 days, please call Orientation Reservations at 805-893-3443 for assistance. You must call us directly if you need to cancel your entire reservation, as this cannot be done online.
