UCSB Mandatory Education

Who must complete the UCSB Mandatory Education requirements?

All incoming First Year, Transfer, and Education Abroad Program students must complete the three online courses and the two-hour in-person Gaucho FYI workshop.

What happens if I do not complete UCSB Mandatory Education requirements?

Students who do not complete these mandatory requirements will not be able to register for future quarters until the requirements are completed.

Online Modules

How do I sign up for the three online courses?

Students will receive an email to their Umail account from EverFi, the company we have partnered with to provide our online education. The email will arrive from automated-message@everfi.net, and will provide you with a link to sign in using your UCSB NetID. Check your email and junk mail, and if you have not received the email by mid-September, contact sa-newstudentreq@ucsb.edu

I am having technical difficulties with the courses. What do I do?

Click on the "Tech Support" link on the login page or contact EverFi Support 24/7 at 1-866-384-9062. Students do not need to be logged in to the course to access Support. 

Additionally, you may want to review the Troubleshooting Guide and the minimum system requirements.

I'm stuck in a course and I can't advance or click continue.

Our online courses work best with Google Chrome and Firefox browsers. Try accessing the course from another browser, which will most likely resolve the issue.

Videos are freezing, looping, or starting then stopping.

This most likely means your internet connection is having a hard time loading the videos. The video file is trying to load, but is not able to load far enough ahead (buffer) to keep up.

First, always make sure you are using the most up to date version of your browser for optimal performance.

Here are some tips for general users to follow:

  1. If you are experiencing freezing, looping, or starting then stopping, hit the "Pause" button (just once) and wait for the video to buffer. It can be tempting to stop/start the video, or click around to get things moving faster, but this can hurt the loading speed more, and even prompt the video start from the beginning again. You can watch the playbar to see how the loading is going. The more you let the video load, the smoother your experience will be.

  2. If you are experiencing looping or the next arrow does not trigger, try hitting “Back” or refresh the page to try and trigger the next arrow.

I can't get a video to load.

Try this first:

  1. Switch browsers. Use Chrome or Firefox when you can instead of IE.

  2. Update your browser to the most recent version.

  3. Clear Cache: http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser's-Cache

If you still can’t load it, try the following: 

  1. Close all other applications and tabs (i.e. iTunes, Facebook, YouTube, etc.).

  2. Ensure course is in its own browser window, not within a frame of the school portal or email client.

  3. Reboot the computer.

  4. If on a wireless connection, try a wired connection.

  5. Disable all popup blockers and 3rd party toolbars.

  6. Try accessing from a different network connection (computer lab, home, library, etc.).

I can't find a navigation button to move forward in the module.

If you seem stuck, your screen may be zoomed in too much causing you to miss a prompt or navigation button.

To reset your zoom:

  • On a PC or Chromebook, hit "control 0 (zero)"
  • On a Mac, hit "command 0 (zero)"

If that doesn’t work, try the following:

  1. Switch browsers. Use Chrome or Firefox if you can, instead of Internet Explorer.

  2. Check and update your browser to the most recent version: http://www.whatismybrowser.com

How long will it take for me to complete the online courses? Do I have to complete it in one sitting?

It should take between 2 and 2.5 hours to complete Part 1 of all three courses. It should take between 15 and 20 minutes to complete Part 2 of the courses. Students will receive an email to complete Part 2 of the courses approximately 30 to 45 days after completing Part 1. Students do not have to complete the course in one sitting, you can return to the modules at any time. 

Are my answers to the courses confidential?

Yes, all answers are strictly confidential.

I am a non-traditional student. Do I have to complete the three online courses?

Gaucho FYI

How do I sign up for Gaucho FYI?

The link is available on the UCSB Mandatory Education page. (If you are in FSSP, you will receive an email with an assigned session date and time).

Where will the workshops take place for the Gaucho FYI program?

All Gaucho FYI Workshops will take place on campus. You will receive detailed instructions in a confirmation email when you sign up and in a reminder email.

I signed up for Gaucho FYI, but want to change to another day and time. What do I do?

You can change your Gaucho FYI session up to 24 hours in advance of your session, as long as space is still available in an alternative session. Requests to change sessions less than 24 hours in advance will not be considered. If an emergency prevents you from attending your session, please send an email to sa-newstudentreq@ucsb.edu and include your name and Perm Number.

I am having difficulties signing up for a Gaucho FYI session. What do I do?
